You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having
21 juni 2010 - Minneapolis, Minnesota, Verenigde Staten
I left Calgary the next morning and headed towards Highway 1 and go east as fast as possible.
I soon found myself on the shoulder and got a hitch after 5 minutes already. The hitch wasn't a good one though and I got just as far as 1 exit. However, without this one I probably would have missed out on what turned out to be the longest hitch I ever had.
A 70 year old Canadian (Patrick Perrault) and his doggie (Gina) pulled over in his minivan and actually brought me all the way to Winnipeg (1300Km) in just one day! This old hoser just wanted some company on the long ride to Ottawa and he talked for almost 18 hours straight. We also got into some trouble when he was driving 120 in a 80km/h zone. For the second time this month, I was being chased by flashing lights as we were pulled over by the police. The cop was pretty nice about it too, and let us of with a warning! If only Belgian cops were as nice as the Canadian ones, my brother would've been rich.
Anyway, we drove and drove for hours through the pouring rain. It was coming down so hard you could not see 20 meters ahead but still this old guy was doing 110Km/h while reading his logbook. The landscape between Calgary and Winnipeg is pretty boring: green, flat, some cows and every 20km a house.
Got into Winnipeg, stayed at the hostel and met another hitchhiker (Ian) who was going the same way I am. We decided to join forces the next morning and head to the United States at 8 in the morning. Soon enough, we found ourselves on the highway South and got a hitch in a matter of minutes. The sun was shining and all was going well.. until we hit the border..
Our weird fellowship set off all the red flags and we were asked to pull over into garage 3, where three US Border officers were awaiting us for a "Gestapo"-esque inquisition. What followed was an interrogation that seemed to last forever, with officers firing question after question as to what we are up to. We all had nothing to hide, so I was pretty confident we would get in the country fast.
Until... They took everything out of the car and started searching our bags.
My newfound co-hitchhiker was actually on his way to a protest march against the G8 in Toronto and had some notes on that with him, as well as a list of buildings where they give out free food (just in case he ran out of money). Coincidently, this list had some federal buildings on it and this did NOT go well with the customs, and further investigation followed. After about 1,5 hours, all of us got our entry into the USA and we were back on our way to the Midwest.
In just 4 hitches, we arrived in Minneapolis around 9ish, which meant I was now 1 week ahead of schedule =) That's about 2100Km covered in just 2 days of hitchhiking.
I've been staying in Minneapolis for 3 nights now and am leaving in the morning to go to... somewhere not to far from home ;-)
