Thunderstruck
25 juni 2010 - Kenosha, Wisconsin, Verenigde Staten
It has been a while since my last update but that doesn't mean nothing happened.
After leaving Minneapolis, I had one week to get to Chicago where Centina was meeting me. Since there wasn't much to visit in the meantime and the weather was pretty hot, I decided to visit Lake Michigan. Getting out of a big city turned out to be quite easy as a guy named Adam pulled over and brought me to a good onramp. Working for a local community centre, he showed me a side of Minneapolis that I hadn't seen yet. They invited me to stay there and do some voluntary work but I declined. A decision that I regretted afterwards because it would've been a great experience and the rest of the week didn't turn out the way I hoped anyway. He took me to an organic food store where he was picking up free food for the community centre and I was treated to a big bag of fresh fruits, bread, meat, cheese and a cranberry salad. Most fulfilling hitch ever!
The state park in Sheboygan I was planning on staying at for a couple of days, turned out to be a mosquito infested, over expensive place with only old people and not much to do. I HATED IT. If that wasn't enough, thunderstorms, tornados and heavy rain ruined my whole camping experience. After 2 days I went further south to Kenosha so I would be within hands reach of Chicago. This brought me to Milwaukee where I got to experience something terrible that shooked me to the core. (I'll tell you about that one if I ever feel like it.)
Anyway, I got to Kenosha and decided to camp out in the wild to save some money for Chicago. This turned out to be more frightening than I thought it would be. My senses went into overdrive and every twitch of a branch alerted me of possible danger. In the end, I'm not sure whether I should've been afraid of wild animals or humans, cause I think the latter are potentially more dangerous.
The first night turned out to be just fine and I got some good sleep next to a water tower, but the second night I got washed away by fresh thunderstorms and heavy rain so I spent the night taking shelter in an industrial park, hiding under an overhang. I did however make the best out of the situation: took my shampoo and shower gel, put on my swimming shorts and just took a shower in the middle of the parking lot at 4AM, during the storm! =)
Again, there were some good hitches towards Chicago. I got picked up by a US soldier driving a Ford Mustang GT. There was an old guy showing me his gun and telling me "Now boyyyy, this is the first time I ever picked up a hitchhiker. Don't think about doing something stupid or I will pull over and blow your brains out with this gun". Some people thought I was Mexican and all the other people were really great as well. I genuinely love hitchhiking.
